How to Get Dual Citizenship in Italy – 3 Steps You Should Know

One thing you will have to realize is that getting Italian citizenship is a lengthy process. However, it definitely is worth it. The keys to succeeding in getting your Italian citizenship are patience, determination, and organization. Let’s get started, shall we?

1. Determine Which Route You Should Take

The first step to getting your Italian dual citizenship is to determine the grounds you will use to apply for your dual citizenship. This step is crucial as it will determine how you go about the other steps. Some of the grounds you can use to apply for your Italian citizenship include:

Jure Sanguinis – Citizen by Blood

Jure sanguinis is simply the Latin phrase for “right of blood”.  When it comes to Italian citizenship laws, it is a principle of law that allows you to get Italian dual citizenship by virtue of your Italian ancestry. Of course, you will have to provide proof that your ancestors were Italian.

Jure matrimonii – Citizenship by Marriage

You can also apply for Italian dual citizenship if your spouse is an Italian citizen. If you are living in Italy, you can apply for Italian citizenship 2 years after your union. However, if you’re living outside of Italy, you can apply for citizenship 3 years after your union.

If you qualify for Italian dual citizenship on any of the 2 grounds above, then you can move on to the next step of getting your Italian dual citizenship.

2. Gather all Necessary Documentation

Knowing how to get dual citizenship in Italy is only the tip of the iceberg in the whole application process. One of the most tedious aspects of the journey is gathering all the documentation that you need.

If you’re applying for Italian citizenship by way of descent, you will have to provide extensive documentation proving your eligibility or Italian ancestry. You will present these documents at your citizenship appointment with an Italian consulate if you live outside of Italy.  Each consulate uses its own discretion as to the exact documents you need to present so you will have to find out what your consulate requires from you. If you’re applying in Italy, you will present them at the town hall.

Most of the required documents are proof of naturalization (or lack of it) by your Italian ancestor and vital records for the generations between you and your Italian ancestor. These must have been issued by the town hall in your ancestor’s town of birth or marriage. Don’t worry though, digital record searches make this easy to do.

If applying for Italian citizenship by marriage, you will need proof of having no criminal records from all the places you’ve lived in. You’ll also need your birth certificate, your Italian spouse’s passport and copies of the main pages.

You must apostille (legalize) all the documents you present in your application for Italian dual citizenship. Once you’ve gathered all your documents and filled in the application form, you can then submit it with an application fee.

3. Solo or Use an Agency

As you’ve probably noticed, the entire process can be quite complicated and will require that you understand some of Italy’s immigration laws. It brings about the question of whether you should attempt getting your Italian dual citizenship alone or use a professional agency.

While you may succeed if you go solo, is it really worth the hassle? In order to save yourself time and to avoid frustrations, it is advisable that you use an agency to process your Italian citizenship. While it may cost you a bit more, it will increase your chances of getting your citizenship faster as your agents will know exactly what is needed and what to do at each stage.

“Benvenuti in Italia”

“Welcome to Italy”. Those words will definitely take on a new meaning when you get your Italian citizenship. They will more or less mean the same thing as “welcome home”. Now that you know how to get dual citizenship in Italy, you can start the process.
