Does the consulate keep your documents when you apply for Italian dual citizenship?

A lot of clients ask me about what happens during an Italian dual citizenship appointment.

Generally, you’ll be welcomed and possibly put into a waiting area. Once called, you’ll hand in your documents. While you do this, the consular worker will go over everything with you.

Some consulates have you sit down at a table while others have you talk behind a glass window. (When I first tried to apply for citizenship in New York over ten years ago, I got to sit at a big table upstairs across from a consular worker. I was only behind a glass window for my student visa appointment which came later.)

After going over everything, the consular worker may tell you some documents need to be fixed. This could be for a number of reasons. You may have missing documents or you may need to make changes to names, places or dates. However, if everything is deemed okay the consular worker will take them right away. Then, you’ll get a receipt and be sent on your way. Depending on your consulate, you then may have to wait anywhere from a few months to possibly over two years for recognition.

Does the consulate keep my records?

Yes.

The consulate will keep your records. So, if you want to hold on to your documents for sentimental reasons I recommend getting two of everything. This way, you can give your records to the consulate and still have spares at home.
